The debate over sending more U.S. troops to Iraq heats up in Michigan. Senator Carl Levin spoke at a democratic party fundraiser in Livingston County, and the senator spent much of his time…talking about the war in Iraq.
Senator Carl Levin received an immense applause before giving his speech in Livingston County. This is senator Levin’s first time speaking in Michigan since President Bush announced his plans of sending an additional 20,000 plus troops to Iraq, and he’s making his positron on the topic loud and clear.
Senator Levin: “Troop surge, I think it’s the wrong direction, I think it gives the wrong message to the Iraqis, I think it tells them that they’re future is in our hands rather than their own hands.”
Senator Levin says the solution to Iraq’s violence is political.
Senator Levin: “This is a sectarian battle over power sharing, over money, sharing oil reasons.”
The senator says Iraqi leaders needs to be pressured.
Senator Levin: “To let them know that we’re going to begin to reduce our presences, which forces them to reach a political compromise to end the violence.”
And his words are being felt stronger with local democrats.
Senator Levin: “We have to let them deal with their own politics and no one else can deal with that. We need to let Iraqi’s government run their own government. We need to bring our troops home.”
Next week, Senator Levin says he will present a bi-partisan resolution at the foreign relations committee for his opposition with the troop surge in Iraq.
